KINETICS OF THE CATALYTIC ISOMERIZATION OF NORMAL HYDROCARBON

The Pt-Al203 catalyzed isomerization of n pentane, nhexane, n-heptane and n-octane was studied at temperatures from 300 to 400°C., total pressures from 10 to 20 atmospheres and hydrocarbon to hydrogen ratios from 1 : 1½ to 1 : 10. The catalyst was identical to those in common commercial use. Isome...

Description
Summary:The Pt-Al203 catalyzed isomerization of n pentane, nhexane, n-heptane and n-octane was studied at temperatures from 300 to 400°C., total pressures from 10 to 20 atmospheres and hydrocarbon to hydrogen ratios from 1 : 1½ to 1 : 10. The catalyst was identical to those in common commercial use. Isomerization rates were found to be consistent with the dual function theory: by-which isomeization proceeds via an alkene intermediate chemisorbed on the acid site. Reaction rate Constants for the isomerization of the normal hydrocarbons studied are expresed as a single function of the number of carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon.
