Summary: | Skin integrity is needed so the skin can perform its functions optimally as the human body's first
protection towards pathogens, UV light, and injuries that happen chemically or mechanically. Rose
oil, rice milk, and lavender extracts have potential to increase skin integrity indirectly because of
the antioxidant compounds found in it. The purpose of this research is to explore rose oil, rice milk,
and lavender extracts in increasing skin integrity. In this research, gene expression analysis is done
towards genes in NIH/3T3 cells that have a role in skin integrity, such as type I collagen (COL1A1)
and elastin (ELN) using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Cell viability assay towards NIH/3T3 cells
was done as a preliminary test to prove that every sample concentration used is nontoxic. According
to qPCR results, rose oil and lavender extracts show an increase of COL1A1 gene expression in
NIH/3T3 cells. ELN gene expression analysis couldn't be done because of bad primer efficiency.
Primer screening and analysis for gene expression analysis of genes expressed by keratinocytes that
have a role in skin integrity, such as filaggrin (FLG), involucrin (IVL), and loricrin (LOR), was also done
in this research. This research shows that rose oil and lavender extracts have potential to increase
skin integrity.
