Description
Summary:Probiotics is one of the feed additive that can improve the health and productivity of livestock because it can maintain the health of the digestive system by maintaining balance and physiological microflora in the gut. The use of probiotics can replace the use of antibiotics in chickens maintenance, so it does not leave harmful residues and maintain the health of livestock. This type of bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilus (LA) can help to maintain the health of the digestive fract and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) can improve the taste of food and increase the appetite of livestock. This research for determine the effect oftwo types of probiotics singly and in combination, in chicken body weight, protein content and total cholesterol in the body broiler chickens. Twenty four broiler chickens aged 18 days were divided into 4 groups of chickens (each 6 chickens) and given probiotics for 21 days. Group A were given the probiotic LA, group B were given probiotics SC, group C were given a combination of probiotics LA: SC (l: 1), and group D used as a negative control (not given probiotics). Each chicken was weighed and blood was taken at the specified time. Plasma is taken and determined the levels of protein and total cholesterol. The group of chickens fed probiotics LA, SC, and a combination of both has a significant increase in body weight compared to a negative control group that shorten the time to achieve 1500 gram. The group given probiotic had total cholesterol levels decrease significantly towards the control, but there was no significant difference to the increased levels of the protein in all groups of chickens. Probiotics LA, SC, and the combination could increase the chicken body weight significantly than those who were not given probiotics but it is not effective in increasing levels of protein in the chicken's body. Probiotics treatment also significantly decrease in total cholesterol levels in the blood of broiler chickens in the third week of administration.
