Summary: | Fiber optic has become the backbone for network infrastructure in PT. Freeport
Indonesia (PTFI). With high data transfer and long-range communication
deployment, fiber optic provides numbers of possibilities on how PTFI run its
operations, process, and daily activities. With the on-going digital transformation
process, PTFI is changing the way it operates with new digital approach and
opening a new opportunity to become more efficient in its operations. But this fiber
optic technology also has one physical weakness which is very fragile. This
weakness should be realized when fiber optic must deal with harsh environment
such as mining environment. The numbers of fiber optic cuts and other related
problem has become common in deploying fiber optic due to this weakness and
many industries has developed new approach in develop fiber optic infrastructure
to preserve its durability. The standard for fiber optic has also been developed and
continually reviewed as the fiber optic solution has becoming the main option. The
telecommunication industry is the first-one on deploying the fiber optic
infrastructure as network backbone. But as the technology advance, fiber optic has
become near to the human life. In mining industry, fiber optic standard,
management, monitoring or control should also adapt to the mining environment
which should be different to the telecommunication industry. But the intention
should be the same which is to preserve the fiber optic as an asset as the fiber optic
problem or breaks could result in financial loss to both industries. This study is
intended to evaluate how well PTFI are building the fiber optic infrastructure
regarding standard, management and monitoring or control to support its current
operations. The study also tries to evaluate the effect of the current fiber optic
infrastructure to the PTFI current and near future operation. The result of this study
is to provide strategic approach of fiber optic infrastructure in PTFI area that will
become new ground to support PTFI current and future operations.
