EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF BIOGAS PALM OIL MILL EFFLUENT (POME) ON COMBUSTION AND PERFORMANCE DUAL-FUEL DIESEL ENGINE

Dual-Fuel Diesel Engine is a combustion engine that operates using two fuels simultaneously in the combustion process. Usually, the two types of fuel used are gaseous fuels and liquid fuels. Gaseous fuel is the primary fuel in the combustion process, while liquid fuel is used to ignites the gaseous...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/79436 Dual-Fuel Diesel Engine is a combustion engine that operates using two fuels simultaneously in the combustion process. Usually, the two types of fuel used are gaseous fuels and liquid fuels. Gaseous fuel is the primary fuel in the combustion process, while liquid fuel is used to ignites the gaseous fuel (pilot fuel). One of the gaseous fuels which can be used is Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) biogas. The largest composition of POME biogas is methane and then carbon dioxide. In this study, the amount of carbon dioxide in POME biogas was varied to determine its effect on diesel engine combustions and performances. Variations in the composition of carbon dioxide used were 45% (POME55) and 25% (POME75). The method used in this research is by direct testing on the Yanmar TF 155 R-di diesel engine. The test was carried out by varying the ratio of biogas energy from 0, 20, 40, 60, and 75 percent. In addition, the torque load is varied from 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 Nm. In general, the use of POME biogas will reduce the combustion characteristic and performance of diesel engines. The results of the study concluded that the use of POME biogas will result in a decrease in the IMEP value of 2.38% to 7.97%, a decrease in the effective efficiency value of 40.57% to 60.82%, and an increase in the BSEC value of 75.34 to 184,43 percent. In addition, this study also conclude that a 40% POME75 could produce optimum combustions characteristic and performances. text
