Description
Summary:Abstract:

There are common methods which are oftenly used for the project planning and scheduling, such as Critical Path Method (CPM) and Program Evaluation Review Technique and (PERT). Both, seen from the perspective of flow management, information input/output required by construction processes are often less explicitly represented in process planning stage, and information dependencies among processes are often less explicitly considered. Chen, Q., (2003), Mori, T., et. al., (1999), Yassine, A., (2003), and Wang, W., (2005) in fact have tried to close over these lacks, but just remain to be still less clearly represented. As a result, the constructed schedule is less explicit and not transparent, therefore it often accounts for some project executing.

The lacks can be lessened by identifying information and dependencies among construction activities during the planning process. The identification aims to increase transparency of construction processes. The transparency development process is one of lean construction concept adopted lean production in manufacture (Al-Najjar, 1999).

This research results a project planning algorithm by paying attention information dependencies among activities. The algorithm uses IDEF method (IDEFO and IDEF3) at early planning stage for capturing information flows among activities. With such an explicit representation of information flows, dependencies among activities can be more clearly expressed, and thus the constructed schedule is more obvious and transparent.

This research also prepares information for Operation Milestone used to coordinate each activity and its relationship. An Operation Milestone is designed from information of a Work Package. The Work Package has activities owning information dependency which possibility done by different contractors (without considering main task). With using the Work Package, the Operation Milestone become more explicit and transparent, and can be proposed as a guidance of operation in coordinated contractor activities.
