Summary: | Urban communities are a crucial part of global development especially in the fields of science and economics. In Indonesia, 56.7% of the population lives in urban areas, and it is projected that this number will increase to 66.6% by 2035. Urban areas are dominated by business and economic activities promotes a fast-paced lifestyle characterized by increased mobility, multitasking, productivity, instant gratification, and practicality. The continuous push for movement and development in urban environments leaves little time for individuals to pause and rest. This situation coincides with the phenomenon of urban stress caused by the activities and environment within the city life. In 2021 and 2023, Jakarta ranked 9th and 13th, respectively, among the world's most stressful cities. Urban stress, and stress in general, negatively correlate with the quality and levels of well-being of urban residents. Well-being is highly impactful in urban settings due to its positive correlation with work performance.
Contemplative activities are considered effective in enhancing the well-being of their practitioners. However, these activities are challenging to engage in because of its contrast with the urban lifestyle’s characteristics. This creates an urgency for contemplative spaces within the urban fabric. The increased mobility of urban communities drives the need for enhanced public transportation services, making them an essential element for city dwellers. This is based from the high volume and intensity of public transportation usage, particularly KRL (electric train) commuter trains in the Jabodetabek area. Considering the conditions and characteristics of urban communities and the significance of public transportation, there is a need for an architectural object that integrates mobilization spaces with contemplative spaces as a medium for healing. This integration is envisioned through a station redesign at the Sudirman KRL Station, located in the Golden Triangle area, which has the highest potential stress levels. The station is a part the Dukuh Transit-Oriented Development area, connected to other modes of transportation such as LRT Jatbodetabek, airport train, and MRT, increases the intensity of user. The station will deliver a narrative through sensory design to engage, enhance, and sustain contemplative activities.
