Summary: | As a metropolitan city, Jakarta is the center of the economy, business, and trade,
with various activities occurring within it. Even though it no longer has the status
of a capital city, Jakarta is designated as a Global City, which organizes
international activities within it, including tourism. To make Jakarta a world-class
tourist destination, competent tourism management is needed in terms of its
management and contribution to the city's development. One of the locations
designated as an urban tourism destination is the Blok M area in South Jakarta.
Since the beginning of its development, Blok M, with its shopping center and
culinary attractions, has attracted the public's interest, especially young people, to
come there. It is said that the Blok M tourism area can be developed as a shopping
tourism, arts tourism, entertainment center, MICE tourism, and culinary tourism.
By looking at the massive development in the Blok M area, its designation as an
urban tourism area has great potential to support city development.
In tourism, there are 3A components, namely attractions, amenities, and
accessibility. These three components are the basic things that should be fulfilled
in a tourist destination. Not only that, the development concept is also essential to
determine the direction of movement of a destination. Furthermore, the sustainable
concept has been designated as the basis for urban tourism in Jakarta. This aligns
with the vision of relevant stakeholders to realize Jakarta as a competitive and
sustainable tourist destination. However, there are still development challenges due
to the condition of the 3A component, which still needs to be improved, and the
absence of further direction regarding sustainable concepts. Compared with the
government's initial goals, the problems described previously become obstacles to
realizing these goals. The readiness of the 3A components and the implementation
of sustainable concepts in the Blok M area need to be known to assess the
realization of this vision.
This research is designed to evaluate the readiness of the Blok M area as a
sustainable urban tourism destination in Jakarta. The assessment is based on the
3A components and the sustainable concept, which includes management, sociocultural, environmental, and economic aspects. The assessment components and
indicators were developed through a comprehensive review of relevant literature
on sustainable urban tourism, both at the national and international levels. Thevii
readiness research is conducted using a scoring method, with the assessment
information serving as the basis for the scores.
Based on the results of the analysis, each 3A component has been assessed as ready
to support urban tourism in the Blok M area, with a percentage of 84%. Amenities
achieved the highest component, while accessibility received the lowest score. The
Blok M area is strategic and has long developed into a community tourism
destination, meaning that amenities and accessibility in and around the region have
long been designed to serve the needs of tourists. Attractions component in the Blok
M area also require attention to maintain their position amidst the emerging urban
tourist destinations. Even though those 3A component is considered ready, each
component has room for improvisation, especially when facing challenges
threatening tourism implementation.
The readiness level of the Blok M area in implementing the sustainable concept is
still in the quite ready category with a percentage of 75%. Sustainable management
and environmental components are known to weaken the assessment. Meanwhile,
the implementation of sustainable economic and social culture is considered ready.
It is necessary to align the direction of movement between stakeholders to support
deficiencies in each component. A destination's readiness to implement sustainable
concepts indirectly impacts the level of tourism empowerment and all its
supporters. By understanding the existing strengths and weaknesses, improvement
and development efforts can be made to optimize the Blok M Area's role as a
comprehensive and sustainable urban tourism destination for Jakarta. |
