The wide spread use of the handphone in the world, accompanied by the improvement of the handphone towards a high tech miniature form. Mentioned design course is principally made by product adjustment, i.e. the design is made up based on the average individual condition. Mentioned design principles of the product is discriminating the user with certain limitations, among others people of old age. From earlier studies results and from initial observation, was discovered that most old age people were having difficulties using the present handphone. Those difficulties are related to product interface, product operation, and also the technology to be comprehended.
The use of handphones amongst the elderly is estimated to increase along with the increase of the amount of elder people still fit to work and able to perform their daily activities by themselves. Therefore a handphone design capable of taking into consideration the limitations and characteristics of elderly people when using handphones are required. The design made up taking into consideration mentioned limitations of elderly people is expected to become one of the methods to increase social participation of the elderly people in the community.
In this research an attempt is made for a proposal of a handphone design which takes into consideration the characteristics of the elderly user. The proposed design only covers the interface product and the technology aspects which could be possibly developed from the former product. The redesign is made up based on the performance of the initial product, the Nokia 6585.
The limitation and characteristics of the elderly in using the handphone, were observed from a series of tests undergone by latter. Mentioned tests cover tactile, visual acuity, and usability testing. The tactile and visual acuity tests are to observe the sensory performance of elderly, needed to interact with the interface aspect of the handphone. In this test the performance of the elderly will be compared with the young (20-30 years old) users, which are regarded as users with the best sensory ability. This comparison is to direct the interface product design in order that the elderly are able to interact with the product like youger aged. The usability testing is performed to observe whether the initial product (Nokia 6585) is able to be utilized by the elderly. |
