Description
Summary:Water has an important role in the survival of living things on earth. However, the total distribution of water supplies on earth is mostly in the sea, with a total of 97% of which is saline water. Amid limited distribution of clean water sources, areas such as small islands which have geographically isolated characteristics, small scale economies, and limited natural resources, natural phenomena such as sea water intrusion can threaten the survival of small island communities. Every water source that is intended to be used, such as rivers, lakes or wells, needs to go through a purification process to remove microorganisms and other mineral substances from the water so that it is clean and safe to use. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the sodium chloride (salt) content in sea water can pose a risk to human health and can even result in death. To obtain clean water, the desalination method using solar evaporation is the cheapest method and is suitable for use on a community scale such as small island communities. In implementing the desalination method using solar evaporation, there are design aspects that influence the efficiency of the method, including those related to structure and shape, orientation, solar still chamber as well as operational mechanisms, maintenance, and selection of effective and efficient materials for application to small island communities
