The local anaesthetic effect of lidocaine-epinephrine preparations administered by iontophoresis has been studied on rabbits.

The evaluation of the anaesthetic effect was done by the prick test and by intermittent electric current test. A strong relation between the two methods was found (the corelation factor of each treatment is between 0,84-0,99).

A comparison between two products (factory made and the other one prepared in the laboratory) with the same concentration of lidocaine and different salts of epinephrine resulted in a meaningful difference of anesthesia (P<0,05), the one prepared in the laboratory having the greater effect.

The effect of local anaesthesia produce by subcutan injection was much greater (more than three hours) compare to the one produce by iontophoresis (less than one hour).

Among the various lidocaine-epinephrine preparations studied in this experiment for their local anaesthetic effect, the greatest effect was observed with the preparation containing lidocaine HCl 2% and epinephrine bitartrat 1:80.000. |
