Summary: | Inflammation is the immune system's response to a pathogen, tissue injury, and infection in body
cells which can cause symptoms like redness (rubor/erythema), swelling (tumor/edema), fever
(calor), pain (dolor), and loss of organ/tissue function. Natural medicine can be an alternative
therapy that is considered to have low side effects and safer to consume if used properly. One of
natural ingredient that has potential to treat inflammation is Black Soldier Fly larvae (Hermetia
illucens L.). This study aims to determine the anti-inflammatory activity of Black Soldier Fly / BSF
(Hermetia illucens L.) larvae oil in vitro. The BSF larvae oil obtained from the extraction process
using the reflux method with n-hexane solvent was tested for its anti-inflammatory activity using
inhibition protein denaturation method and blood membrane stabilization using sodium
diclofenac as a standard. The extract with the best anti-inflammatory activity was shown by BSF
D15 larva extract with an IC50 value of 303,100 ± 44,481 µg/mL in the protein denaturation test
and 6720,137 ± 83,700 µg/mL in the blood membrane stabilization test. Further characterization
and identification are needed in development of anti-inflammatory preparations based on BSF
larvae extract.
