Summary:Abstract: <br /> <br /> <br /> Merging process of on-ramp entering the main road may affect the free flow speed, bunching characteristic, and overtaking maneuver of vehicle, and finally will affect the level of performance of the on-ramp and the main road. <br /> <br /> <br /> The objectives of the study are: to evaluate the performance and to calculate the capacity of the ramp junction, and to determine its level of service using US-HCM94. This research also study how vehicle speed is affected by the merging process. <br /> <br /> <br /> The research was conducted on Cawang Interchange (RampB) of Cawang-Tomang Toll Road section between sta.1+600 and sta.1+800. The interchange has two-lane one-way on-ramp, and the main road before merging is a four-lane two-way divided road. The main road after merging is a six-lane two-way divided road. The width of paved shoulder for all section is 200 m and the side friction is low. <br /> <br /> <br /> Data collection was carried out on Monday from 6.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. using two camcorder videos which were installed on a multi story building in the study area. Further data processing was conducted using ITravel computer program which produced Speed-Flow-Density relationship. <br /> <br /> <br /> The result of study indicated that at on-peak hour between 08.15 a.m. to 08.45 a.m., congestion occurred in the road link. This is indicated by the low vehicle speed of less then 15 km/hr. It is found in this study that the capacity of the on-ramp is about 2236 pcu/h/lane. And the capacity of the main road is about 2760 pcu/h/lane. This shows that the capacity of road with similar condition calculated by IHCM 97. By referring to US-HCM it is found that the Level of Service of the ramp junction is F. <br />
