Summary: | Several studies have shown central nervous stimulant/antidepressant effect of Myristica fragrans Houtt. mace (MM). This study was carried out to examine stimulant effect of fractions of MM ethanolic extract. Ethanolic extract of MM were consecutively fractionated with nhexane and ethyl acetate. Each fraction at doses of 10100 mg/kg bw was administered to different group of mice. Five minutes later, the mice behaviors were examined in openfield apparatus for 15 minutes. The stimulated mice were sacrificed, and the levels of astrocytes in the cerebral cortex and caudate putamen were examined. Rearing time and total distance travelled were increased significantly (P <0,05) after administration of ethyl acetate fraction at 60 mg/kg dan 15 mg/kg bw caffeine. Drug treatment also resulted in increased levels of astrocytes in the motor centre M1 and M2. The results suggested that ethyl acetate fraction of ethanolic extract of Myristica fragrans mace has CNS stimulating activity. <br />
