Summary: | Nowadays, the need of surfactant is increasing with the high demand of food, cosmetic, cleaning agent, textile, and pharmacy. It was marked by imported surfactant amount of 44.500 per year. One of the surfactant product that can be developed in Indonesia is sorbitan monooleate. It is caused by the raw material for production of sorbitan monooleate are renewable resources and the existence in Indonesia is guaranteed. Those raw material are oleic acid which can be extracted from palm and sorbitol from cassava. In this research sorbitan monooleate made by reacting sorbitol and oleic acid in stirred batch reactor. The reaction is esterification which use p-toluene sulfonic acid as catalyst.

From the previous research, the yield of sorbitan monooleate has worse quality compare to the chemical and physical properties of standard quality since it has high acid value and brown color. In that research the condition of reaction was kept at 180 degrees C temperature and atmospheric pressure. As comparison, sorbitan monooleate from Sigma and EAC Thailand were used. Those products have acid value of 5,5-6 with yellow light color. This result was caused by temperature and pressure which is to high. So this reaction didn’t operate in optimum condition, even the sorbitan monooleate has color degradation.

The result of this research show that the sorbitan monooleate forming conddition happens in 160 degrees C and 0,3 bar. From this condition, 6,2 acid value and 94% sorbitan monooleate was formed. |
