Tanskanen (2006) states that in contributing the coherence of a text, cohesion could occur as a signal. The occurrence of cohesion, signalled by cohesive devices, could help to improve the coherence of the political speech to create a meaningful message for the audiences. This study aims at analysing the use of cohesive devices in the speech of Theresa May’s Conservative Party Conference in 2017. There are two theories which are used to conduct the study. The theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976) is used to analyse the grammatical cohesive devices and the one proposed by Renkema (2004) for the lexical cohesive devices. The method used to conduct the study is qualitative method. There are several main findings. Personal reference is the most frequently used grammatical cohesive devices with 123 occurences, while repetition the highest number of occurrences among lexical cohesive devices types with 13 times. 2020 Thesis NonPeerReviewed text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102719/1/1.%20COVER%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102719/2/2.%20TABLE%20OF%20CONTENT%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102719/3/3.%20ABSTRACT%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102719/4/4.%20CHAPTER%201%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102719/5/5.%20CHAPTER%202%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102719/6/6.%20CHAPTER%203%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102719/7/7.%20CHAPTER%204%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102719/8/8.%20CHAPTER%205%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102719/9/9.%20REFERENCES%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102719/10/10.%20APPENDIX%20.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/102719/11/150-Kesediaan%20dan%20Embargo%20-%20masni%20butana.pdf MASNI BUTANA MARETANEDHI (2020) A STUDY OF COHESIVE DEVICES IN THE SPEECH OF THERESA MAY’S CONSERVATIVE PARTY CONFERENCE IN 2017.
