Description
Summary:Teaching children how to read in English is not as that easy, moreover when their first language is not English. As the beginner, the children have to be taught how to read in a fun and interesting way based on their biological and psychological aspects. Here, the teacher might use any kinds of techniques to help the children learn to read. One of the Montessori School in Surabaya, it starts to teach reading in English to their Kindergarten Students whose ages around 4 to 5 years old. However, the questions appear related to this condition. This thesis reports the result of the study about the teaching techniques to teach reading used in Montessori School Kindergarten 1 Students and how the techniques are applied in the classroom. This study used theory of teaching techniques from Crookes and Chaudron in Brown (2001) who classifies them into controlled, semi-controlled and free techniques. Through qualitative approach, this study is concerned with the teaching techniques used by the teacher in Kindergarten 1 Ruby class in SNA. The writer did the data by observation and interview. The study found that the techniques applied by the teacher of Kindergarten 1 Ruby class mostly controlled techniques (were warm up, review, setting, and identification), supported by reading aloud, question and answer that appears once in during lesson. Free technique that used during giving the lesson is games. The way the teacher teaches the children to read, she uses phonics as the consideration of the student’s level as the beginner in reading lesson.
