Summary: | The gender stereotyped might exist in children literature. The aim of this study is to reveal the representations of the male and female characters in the movies of Diary of a Wimpy Kid(2010) and Ramona and Beezus (2010) because children literature has significance roles in children’s knowledge to define their gender and roles in society. The mix methods design, qualitative-quantitative study is applied because the writer will use some numerical data and text information. The numerical data are automatically calculated by a computer-assisted software called AntConc, while the text information is the qualitative part of this study. The corpus is from the movie subtitles. Specifically, this study analyzes the typical content words used by the male and female characters in both movie subtitles. The representation of male and female are identified and revealed through listing all the content words in the movies subtitle. The content words that including nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are obtained from the utterances pronounced by the male and female characters. The writer classified the nouns according to WordNet. Moreover, the writer classified the type of verbs, adjectives and adverb based on Dixon’s book. The result shows that the male and female characters stereotyped traditionally as the society constructed. The male character tends to exhibit physical activities through his activities and the setting of his activity that take places outside the domestic area. On the other hand, the female character is related to domestic setting, her family, and showing more emotions. |
