Summary:The tradition of teaching reading in Arabic classic texts or Kit ah Kuning is an interesting phenomenon in pesantrens. It is one of the unique characteristics of the educational program in pesantrens either viewed from the chosen classic texts or from the teaching process and the way in which the Arabic reading texts are taught. This tradition has been preserved for a long time with the use of the grammar translation method. In this study, the communicative approach is proposed as an alternative method in teaching reading Arabic classic texts. It is designed to improve the students' proficiency in comprehending Arabic reading texts and mastering vocabulary.
