Summary: | English is an international language that is used around the world to communicate. It should
be introduced to children at an early age, so that the child can be adept and fluent in
communicating using English. Teacher talk is the ability of a teacher to interact with students
in the classroom. The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of teacher talk and student
talk used within the class. The data were collected from International Class Programme
(ICP) B class in Al-Munawwarah Islamic elementary school in Pamekasan Madura in three
meetings. The classroom interaction was observed and recorded on camera digital. The data
were analyzed using the types of teacher talk and student talk based on Brown (2007)
adapted from Moskoits (1971). The writer found that the most frequently type used by the
teacher was asking question and student response specific was the most frequently used by
the students. Teacher dominated the class by producing 60.23% utterances and the students
produced 39.7%. It was concluded that the teacher should limit the use of types of teacher
talk. This situation makes the classroom interaction categorized as teacher-centered. |
