It helps the writers of academic articles in building cohesion between clauses, sentences, and paragraphs in academic articles. As an important element in academic writing, linking adverbials should be applied effectively and correctly in order to build a good cohesion in academic articles. Unfortunately, most of non-native English speakers including Chinese and Indonesian use linking adverbials excessively in their academic writing. Besides, they also apply linking adverbials in initial position frequently. Sentence initially linking adverbials is one of informal feature in academic articles because it reflects to the characteristic of English spoken language. The problems are caused by the lack ability of the use of linking adverbials in academic articles. It is influenced by the lack information of the use of linking adverbials in academic articles. Furthermore, since, the use of words and language in academic articles is influenced by the characteristics of academic articles in every disciplines, the use of linking adverbials in academic articles is also influenced by the characteristic of the academic articles in every disciplines. Therefore, it is a needed to conduct a research about the use of linking adverbials in academic articles across disciplines. The data of this study is 200 academic articles from four disciplines including health science, social science, life science, and physical science which were taken from representative academic data of journal articles published in Elsevier. The data of this study then analyzed qualitatively. The result of this study shows that there is no difference frequency in applying linking adverbials in academic articles across four disciplines based on its semantic category. The difference can be seen from the frequency of the use of linking adverbials in academic articles across disciplines individually. It means that in choosing linking adverbials individually, the writers of academic articles are influenced by the characteristic of academic articles in their disciplines. In contrast, the distribution of linking adverbials (initial position, medial position, and final position of sentences) in academic articles across disciplines is not influenced by the characteristics of academic articles in every discipline. It is influenced by the meaning of every linking adverbials and its function as a sentence connector in academic articles.
