Summary: | All this time, gay has always been stereotyped by the media, but nowadays gay can create
their own definition through the media. Along with the development of media, colored
skin gay people are now able to represent themselves through media. One example of the
media is film. In A Heartbeat animated short film is one of the examples of film that is
produced by colored skin gay people. This animated short film depicts two gay teenagers,
named Jonathan and Sherwin, at school area, so it is believed that the definitions made by
the director are very complex. The purpose of this study is to reveal how gay is being
stereotyped in the process of coming out based on their race according to the gay
characters in In A Heartbeat animated short film. In this study, the writer uses qualitative
method and semiotic approach by John Fiske to classify the data of this study. For the
theory, the writer uses Stereotyping theory by Richard Dyer. The data are taken from
several scenes that related to the issue of this study. The writer found that the color of
your skin determines how you will be treated. The writer also found that colored skin
people are stereotyped as hyper-masculine, so that is why Jonathan is portrayed as a
masculine figure. On the other hand, light-skinned people are stated that their role in
relations varies based on the race of their partner. That is why Sherwin is portrayed as a
feminine figure. |
