Along with the development of media, colored skin gay people are now able to represent themselves through media. One example of the media is film. In A Heartbeat animated short film is one of the examples of film that is produced by colored skin gay people. This animated short film depicts two gay teenagers, named Jonathan and Sherwin, at school area, so it is believed that the definitions made by the director are very complex. The purpose of this study is to reveal how gay is being stereotyped in the process of coming out based on their race according to the gay characters in In A Heartbeat animated short film. In this study, the writer uses qualitative method and semiotic approach by John Fiske to classify the data of this study. For the theory, the writer uses Stereotyping theory by Richard Dyer. The data are taken from several scenes that related to the issue of this study. The writer found that the color of your skin determines how you will be treated. The writer also found that colored skin people are stereotyped as hyper-masculine, so that is why Jonathan is portrayed as a masculine figure. On the other hand, light-skinned people are stated that their role in relations varies based on the race of their partner.
