Summary: | The issue of aging population has been drawn attention in line with the increase of
population health quality which among other things is indicated by the increasing rate of
life expectancy in the past three decades. The rate of life expectancy in Indonesia has been
increasing at 70 years. The situation is influenced by anti aging movement that carries out a
new concept of heath for older people.
This study is aimed to examine how older people construct their identity and how anti
aging movement plays a role in such an identity construction. Informants of this study are
doctors, activists of anti aging movement and older people. Result of the study
demonstrates that the older people construct their identity internally and externally.
Internally, older people consider themselves as strong, productive and attractive people. In
this sense they oppose the idea that older people are weak and getting older is natural.
Externally, the identity of older people is constructed by medical industry which supports
the anti aging movement. Such movement is based on modern medical sciences. Anti aging
movement is a cultural practice which generates new health care for older people by
providing profound health products and services.
This study also indicate that there are social resistances against industrial construction of
anti aging. |
