Description
Summary:Cardiovascular disease especially coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke is the main killer in Indonesia. Atherosclerosis is the main cause of CHD. Hyperlipidemia is the main factor causing atherosclerosis. Indonesia is rich in medicinal plants, with various benefits. Sambung nyawa leaves (Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr.) are usually used as antihyperlipidemic agent. The objectives of this study are to evaluate water fraction of extract ethanolic of sambung nyawa leaves (FAES) as antihyperlipidemic agent and investigate its mechanism as lipase inhibitors. Antihyperlipidemic activity assay of FAES was conducted on high fat diet induced rats. High fat diet consisted of pellet: lard: egg yolk (80:15:5). High fat diet was given for 30 days. There are 7 groups of rats i.e. normal group, negative (water) group, negative (Na-CMC), FAES at dose 36,5 mg/kg, FAES 73 mg/kg, FAES 146 mg/kg, and positive control group. Total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol were measured at day 0, 30, and 45, meanwhile lipase activity was measured at days 30 and 45. The results demonstrated that FAES contain polyphenol and flavonoid as much as 2,42+ 0,05 % and 1,51 + 0,01% respectively. Administration FAES for 15 days at dose 36.5 mg/kg, 73 mg/kg, and 146 mg/kg decreased total cholesterol level as 21.38+3.09 %
