Summary: | Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (Special Region of Yogyakarta, also known
as DIY) is one of the provinces in Indonesia whose economy immensely relies on
tourism, while Japan is one of the largest tourists contributors to DIY and often
occupies the top-three rank. Japan as a nation is a complex society full of
contradictions and Japanese often finds it hard to accept the conditions and
cultures of other nations that are different from theirs. Therefore, it is necessary to
first comprehend their traits in order to fulfill and satisfy their needs.
This report provides you data regarding Japanese tourists traits and reveal
what become their preferences or favorites (sites, activities, vehicles, etc) during
their sojourn in DIY. The writer conducted a quantitative research in the low
season period of February-March 2012 involving 50 Japanese tourists as
respondents. Low season refers to the times when the number of tourist visit drops
to the low levels, causing the diminution revenue to local businesses. Respondents
were asked to answer the questions on the questionnaire and express their
opinions regarding the DIY tourism.
Through the research, it is found that uncertainty avoidance among
Japanese tourists when choosing place to sojourn is not very high. In other words,
Japanese begin to be able to accept things that are different from their prevalence.
Some Japanese tourists chose to sojourn at locals homes. Nevertheless, in other
condition, such us when choosing vehicle for transport, Japanese tourists tend to
be selective and chose the ones they are familiar with rather than trying something
new or unfamiliar. Traditional cultural dimension, such as need to savor relaxation,
as what they do at the hot spring (onsen) still remains. Many of Japanese tourists
visiting DIY expect to be able to enjoy spa and relaxation. |
