ETD This study aims to obtain data on black rice germplasm diversity and how to cultivate in Sleman, Bantul, and Magelang district and to investigate the conservation of black rice in farmers level and identify their barriers. Research sites were in three districts namely Sleman regency (Seyegan and Pakem subdistrict), Bantul regency (Pundong, Bambanglipuro and Bantul subdistrict), and Magelang regency (Sawangan and Bandongan subdistrict). The research was conducted in June-September 2012. The tools used in this research is a questionnaire. Analysis was performed on the results of questionnaire of primary data tabulation and descriptive analysis of secondary data. Analysis of the diversity of cultivars and cultivation techniques are grouped according to key characteristics. The results showed there were four groups of black rice varieties namely Melik, Cempo Ireng, Padi Hitam, and Padi Hitam Cianjur. There is a fairly high diversity in seed shape character (CV = 58.01%), brown rice length (CV = 55.31%), and the color brown rice (CV = 23.79%). The main motivation of black rice farmers to grow black rice is due to the high price (26%), health (14%), and for the conservation of black rice germplasm, because of the high quality of cultivars and farmers sovereignity (12% each). Farmers have been planting local varieties of black rice largely based on conventional cultivation practices with a tendency to organic farming approach.
