Meropenem is a broad-spectrum and most expensive antimicrobial agent that highly potent as empirical and definitive therapy against serious infection caused by multi-drug resistant organism (MDRO). But meropenem use is now threatened by the emerging of several reports about resistance to this agent. The antibiotic resistance may emerge as a result of inappropriate use of antibiotic. Hospital pharmacist has the role and responsibility to improve drug use appropriateness. This study will assess the quality (appropriateness) use of meropenem in regional general hospital of Kabupaten Jombang using Gyssens� category flowchart. This study conducted into two-phase quality evaluation, 3-month in retrospective during October-December 2012 and 3-month in prospective during February-April 2013. Provision of drug information to prescribers as a discusssion using leaflet contains meropenem information was given by researcher in the intervening period. The qualitative evaluation of meropenem use in regional general hospital inpatient wards of Kabupaten Jombang had results that the appropriateness use of meropenem increase after drug information provision from 7,1% to 39,4% (p<0,05). Provision of drug information decrease inappropriate use of meropenem due to inappropriate dose (from 32,1% to 30,3%), inappropriate administration interval (from 50,0% to 27,3%), duration too long (from 35,71% to 6,1%) and the availability of more cheapest and narrower-spectrum alternative agents (from 64,3% to 48,5%).
