STUDY OF QUINOLONE CLASS ANTIBIOTICS SENSITIVITY TESTING ON ESBL (EXTENDED SPECTRUM β-LACTAMASE) PRODUCING PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA IN CLINICAL ISOLATES FROM YOGYAKARTA

Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important pathogen commonly implicated in serious nosocomial infections such as pneumonia and sepsis lung infections and death in children and adults with cystic fibrosis. It is known to exhibit intrinsic resistance to several antimicrobial agents. In additio...

It is known to exhibit intrinsic resistance to several antimicrobial agents. In addition to the intrinsic resistance of P. aeruginosa, it also produces the enzymes, namely -lactamases, which are responsible for the wide spread -lactam resistance. Objective: The objective of this study is to know the sensitivity of the Quinolone class antibiotics towards ESBL producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Method: This descriptive study was carried out on 30 isolates of P. aeruginosa obtained from several hospitals in Yogyakarta. ESBL producing isolates were screened with ESBL detection test and confirmed with phenotypic ESBL confirmatory test. Antibiotic susceptibility test were done by Kirby Bauer method and interpreted according to CLSI guideline for four quinolone class antibiotics. Result: Among the 30 isolates of P. aeruginosa obtained it was found that 22 (73.33%) of them are ESBLproducers. The ESBL producing P. aeruginosa isolates were found to be highly susceptible to Norfloxacin (86%) followed by Ciprofloxacin and Ofloxacin (77%) and the last levofloxacin (73%). Conclusion: Prevalence of P. aeruginosa producing ESBL in Yogyakarta is quite high in the isolates obtained and they are highly susceptible to Norfloxacin.
