Dahlia Herawati, S.U., Sp.Perio (K) ETD Mangosteen peel (Garcinia mangostana L.) is believed as a mature fruit with many special advantages to a wide range of pharmacological activities, one of which is for healing wounds. The mangosteen peel contained several important substances that can act as anti-inflammatory agents, such as γ-mangostin and flavonoids. Because of this potential, this study aimed to determine the effect of mangosteen peel extract gel application (Garcinia mangostana L.) against the density of collagen fibers in the gingival wound healing (studies on Rattus norvegicus). The study sample consisted of 27 Rattus norvegicus rats in 3 months old with body weight of 200-250 grams, which given a wound by punch biopsy on its mandibular labial gingiva. The samples were divided into 3 groups, the positive control group (using aloclair gel), treatment group (using the mangosteen peel extract gel), and the negative control group (using a 2% CMC-Na gel). Samples were then decapitated, 3 mice from each group on days 3, 7, and 14. From wound tissue, it was made into histological specimens which later stained with Trichrome Mallory to assess the density of collagen fibers. The data obtained were tested with Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the density of collagen fibers between the positive control group and the treatment group (p 0.05) on days 3, 7, 14, and there were significant differences between the treatment group and the negative control group on day -7 (p <0,05). Through the results of this study, it can be seen that mangosteen peel extract gel (Garcinia mangostana L.) is able to accelerate the density of collagen fibers in the gingival wound healing (studies on Rattus norvegicus) which particularly shown on day-7 observations [Yogyakarta] : Universitas Gadjah Mada 2013 Thesis NonPeerReviewed , REINA PARARDHYA NADIAWATI and , Dr. drg.
