Summary: | The aim of this study was to compare the antibacterial activity of aqueous
and ethanolic fruit rind extract of Garcinia mangostana Linn on selected
pathogenic bacteria. Mangosteen known to be rich of active compound such as
antosianin, xanthone, and tannin that has many advantages including antibacterial
properties. Antibacterial activity of ethanolic and aqueous extract of mangosteen
rind was screened against Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus using
dilution and plating method. The result of the study showed that the ethanolic and
aqueous extract of mangosteen rind at a different concentration could inhibit the
growth of the bacterial species tested. The ethanolic extract showed a higher
activity than aqueous extract. Ethanolic extract of mangsoteen rind could inhibit
the total growth of Escherichia coli with 8% extract, and 2% extract for
Staphylococcus aureus. |
