Summary: | Magic Realism is a global literary tendency which the effect starting to
enter Indonesia in 1990�s. The initial indication of the magic realism is to
represent myths and legends as magic and traditional in the middle of modern
world. This indication is founded in Badruddin Emce�s poem entitled Gendhing
Pulebahasan. This research aims to measure magic realism degree in Gendhing
Pulebahasan and to compare the narrative context in this poem with the social and
cultural context where it came from. To gain it, this research use magic realism
narrative theory which is presented by Wendy B. Faris. In the theory, there are
five characteristic elements, which are the irreducible element, the phenomenal
world, the unsettling doubts, merging realms, dan disruption of time, space, and
identity.
From the analysis of the characteristics of magical realism either on each
element or the relationship between elements, this poem qualify as a work of
magical realism because this poem has five magic realism elements of
characteristics, both within itself and in relation to others. As a work of magical
realism Gendhing Pulebahasan poem has a fairly strong level indicated by the
overall narrative structure of the real characters and magical characters and the
real events and the magical events which are proved to be balanced.
As a magical realism poem, Gendhing Pulebahasan raised a number of
issues related to the social and cultural context in Cilacap. This poem continues to
be critical both in front of the real and the magical. Thus, the poet succeeded in
stating his view which is different from the collective perspective. Moreover, in
the presence of modernization as a global context, this poem also postured to be in
line but on the other side in the opposite line. Therefore, this poem is actually not
reject modernity in itself, but the accompanying exploitative character. The
relationship between the traditional world and the modern world is still running
fine so far not exploitative. The issue was successfully delivered by the poet in
accordance with the socio- cultural context in Cilacap after undergoing
modernization by way of presenting the magical world and the real world and the
traditional and the modern with the narrative strategies of magical realism. |
