Summary: | Several concerns in dynamic large scale network are routeability and reachability. An example of large scale network implementation is communication among networks that have their own Autonomous System (AS) number. Communication can work between that networks by implementing a routing protocol that guarantee network performance. Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) considered to be an appropriate routing protocol for that kind of network because of its scalability and convergent both on different AS and inside same AS. Based on the background, purpose of this research is to implement routing protocol BGP both in different AS and inside same AS. Another purpose is to know path selection process on BGP network based on adding Weight and Local-Preference attributes.
First step in this research is implementing BGP basic configuration on networks designed before in order to communication on network both different and inside AS can work well. Then the network is simulated to know path selection process before network is added by any BGP attributes. Second steps are configuring weight attribute on border router and continued with simulation to know path selection process in externals route after adding weight attribute. Besides that, there is disconnecting route scenario on link with highest weight value to know its impact to path selection decision. Last steps are configuring local-preference attribute on internal router and then it is simulated to observing path selection process on internals route after adding local-preference attribute.
The result of research shows that path selection process on BGP network is based on path selection algorithm of BGP routing protocol. Addition of weight and local-preference attributes on routers influence decision of path selection. Thus this action can be used to manage routing and traffic on each link based on routing needed.
