Hemicelluloses consisted of xylan, not easily degraded by microorganisms. Only several species of microorganisms, especially molds could use xylan as carbon sources for their growth. Some species of molds released xylanase to hydrolyze xylan into xylose or xylo-olygosaccharides. This enzyme was needed for paper industry, especially pulp bleaching proccesses. The objective of this study were to obtain isolates capable to grow on leaf litter, to observe xylanase activity produced by the isolates and to identify selected isolates. The research was commenced by selection of molds isolates based on capability to grow on solid medium containing xylan, and xylanolitic index using congo red methode. Grown mold colonies showed a high xylanolitic index were selected for further investigation. The ability of selected isolates to grow on liquid medium was investigated through the growth experiment using liquid media containing leaf litter powder or Birchwood xylan as carbon source.
