EFFECT OF COOKING TIME AND CAUSTIC SODA (NaOH) CONCENTRATION ON PULP YIELD AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SALACCA PSEUDO-STEM WITH TRADITIONAL CHEMI-MECHANICAL METHOD

An effort to increase added value of salacca pseudo-stem waste and to increase farmer's income, had led to the study on the pulping of material by using shemi¬mechanical pulping process of traditional equipments. The objective of this study are to observe the yield of pulp produced and to know...

The objective of this study are to observe the yield of pulp produced and to know the effect of cooking time and caustic soda (NaOH) concentration on the cooking liquor. Salacca pseudo-stem was pulped using NaOH liquor of 10 %, 12 %, and 14 % for 2 and 3 hours. The data obtained were analized using Completely Randomized Design with factorial experience 2 x 3. The parameters observed were yield, Kappa number, tensile, bursting, and tear strength. The result showed that salacca pseudo-stem could be processed satisfactorily into pulp by using traditional chemi-mechanical process. The average of yield were 28,74 % - 40,18 %, Kappa number 30,11 — 32,64, tensile strength 3,116 — 4,182 Nm/g, bursting strength 0,498 — 0,641 KPa m21g, dan tear strength 4,944-8,261 mN.m21g. The result showed that interaction of cooking liquor concentration and cooking time didn't affect the yield as well as the physical properties of pulp produced. The longer cooking time and the higher liquor concentration increased the yield, tensile strength, and bursting strength as well, but reduced the tearing strength of the pulp produced. The increasing of the pulp yield is also followed by a lower kappa number. 2008-08-09 Article PeerReviewed application/pdf en https://repository.ugm.ac.id/135446/1/Prosiding%20Seminar%20Nasional%20Mapeki%20XI.pdf Marsoem, Sri Nugroho and -, Danang Sudarwoko Adi (2008) EFFECT OF COOKING TIME AND CAUSTIC SODA (NaOH) CONCENTRATION ON PULP YIELD AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SALACCA PSEUDO-STEM WITH TRADITIONAL CHEMI-MECHANICAL METHOD.
