Summary:ABSTRACT A research was conducted to know the characteristics of carrageenan from Eucheuma cottonii seaweed that collected in Lombok island. This research conducted in two steps, i.e. carrageenan extraction with isopropyl alcohol precipitation and characterization of carrageenan. Experimental design of this research was completely randomized design. The results indicated that carrageenan from Eucheuma cottonii seaweed that collected in Lombok island has 35.76% yield, 11.62% moisture, 3.20% ash, and 18.13% sulphate. Viscosity range of carrageenan was 12.25-18.25 cP, and its increased with addition of KC1 but decreased with addition of CaC12 and NaCl. Identification of chemical group characteristics of carrageenan type with FTIR spectroscopy indicated that was kappacarrageenan. Key words: Carrageenan, Eucheuma cottonii, seaweed
