Wear debris has been linked to complications including tissue inflammation, osteolysis process, and implant loosening. Reduction of wear debris has been reduced by surface treatments of the biomaterials. Surface treatments with ion implantation has been used to reduce the wear debris. Ion implantation technique uses highly energetic beams of ions (positively charged atoms) to modify surface structure and chemistry of biomaterials.
