Summary: | This paper studies the influence of a novel entitled Majdulin by Al-Manfaluti on the novel “The Sinking of the Van Der Wijck” by Hamka. The former was a renowned translated work into Arabic from French originally by Alphonse Karr. Some critics mentioned that the translation was even better in its presentation, given the talent of Manfaluti in Arabic. This study will only focus of the Arabic version of the novel without attempting to refer to its French original. In Magdalena, the main characters are Steven and Magadelena while in Hamka’s version the characters were Zainudin and Hayati. The novel has placed Hamka with some other prominent writers of his time and could even be regarded as his masterpiece. Upon comparing the two novels, apart from the similarities, Hamka’s had managed to localize the novel with his own style of writing. Albeit the critics hauled at him as a plagiarist, he did however manage to come out strong with his own expression and style. Having been exposed to some Arabic translations of western novels, he nevertheless crafted his own path to become known as a writer with his own style and distinction. |
