A case study research design was employed to collect in-depth information from ten first-year students whose vocabulary size was adequate to allow learning through guessing. The study was carried out in three phases: first, students completed a questionnaire on the strategy choice; second, they took a vocabulary test to see their actual practice of the strategy and finally a structured interview was conducted to examine the underlying reasons of their choice.
