Summary: | Schools can play an important role to address behavioral health needs of students because mental illness typically appears by the age of 14 ( Kessler , Chiu , Demler , & Walters , 2005 ) . Therefore , it is important that stakeholders such as healthcare providers , community leaders , and teachers work with families to enhance the quality of life for children through prevention , intervention , and collaboration of psychological services . Objective . The objective of this paper is to assess barriers and challenges in providing coordinated family - school - community behavioral health services . This paper provides recommendations for practices and protocols for building collaborative relationships to improve access to services . Method . Qualitative interviews for this collaborative action research study were completed in the Spring and Summer of 2019. Teachers , parents , and Child - service specialists were recruited as participants ( N - 24 ) . Semi - structured interviews were conducted with participants to define cultural definitions of behavioral health , barriers when working with other stakeholders , and recommendations to improve access to behavioral health services. |
