Summary: | The study investigates the potential impact of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT on the academic performance of Senior High School students at De La Salle University-Integrated School, Manila. While it is evident that students widely use chatbots for studying, the effect of such use on student learning outcomes has yet to be clarified. This study examines the possible relationship between the use of ChatGPT in the academic setting and grades, comprehension of lessons, and students’ perceived effectiveness of the chatbot as a learning aid in different subject categories. Data was collected through an online survey of 96 respondents enrolled in different strands. Many students reported using ChatGPT for academic purposes, particularly in English subjects. The data also revealed that the usage of ChatGPT significantly impacts comprehension in Natural Science and Humanities subjects. Additionally, the perceived effectiveness of ChatGPT varied by subject, suggesting that there are nuanced impacts on different academic disciplines. Finally, the results revealed that the frequency of ChatGPT use impacts grades in only four of the fourteen core subjects. This paper has an important implication for the body of knowledge that relates to the role of AI in education and, hence, may be convenient for practitioners and administrators to use AI tools. Future research could consider the long-term effects and ways through the integrations of ChatGPT that can be optimized into subject-specific instruction. In light of all this, the study provides valuable insights into the educational implications of AI technologies like ChatGPT. |
