An empirical study on the bottom of the pyramid entrepreneurs in the Philippines

Looking at todays trend of entrepreneurs, it can be discerned that most of them come from the upper portion of the social pyramid. Hearing successful stories from the elite is common, but having people in the bottom of the pyramid become successful in entrepreneurship can definitely instigate interest. As such, this study aims to (1) identify the current profile and (2) attitudes towards entrepreneurship of the bottom of the pyramid individuals in CALABARZON, as well as (3) to gauge the sustainable business practices that they are employing during their business operations. The data used in this study came from the Annual Poverty Indicator Survey (APIS) in the year 2008 as well as an interview-assisted survey conducted by the researchers. Using the logit model, results revealed that bottom of the pyramid individuals only employ a certain extent of economic, environmental, and social sustainable business practices. With this, effective recommendations have been provided for the bottom of the pyramid entrepreneurs as well as programs that the government may implement to make these bottom of the pyramid businesses more sustainable.
