Summary:This study aims to identify the specific motivating factors that drive the Filipinos to repeatedly join noontime game shows. A non-probabilistic sampling method was used in gathering 50 contestants from a popular noontime game show. Interviews were conducted among twenty-five (25) neophyte contestants and twenty-five (25) professional contestants. A content analyzed and categorized semi-structured interview guide written in Filipino was used to obtain the data. Neophyte and professional contestants share money as the primary motivation. For the needs that prompted the contestants to join a noontime game show, majority of neophyte and professional contestants stated that it was really the lack of income or unemployment that made them join noontime game shows. Majority of the neophyte contestants claimed that they were really nervous, while the majority of the professional contestants have become used to joining noontime game shows depict realistic drama that makes it a new sociological phenomenon in the Philippines nowadays. This study will benefit social psychologists in determining the motivation behind joining game shows. The concepts of luck ( suwerte ), hiya or shame, and other Filipino values related to joining noontime game shows that were determined in this study reflect interesting characteristics that could be relevant in further understanding the Filipino psyche.
