Description
Summary:Research in the field of artificial intelligence in education gave rise to the advent of new approaches to improve teaching and learning techniques. The idea of developing learning companions to support collaborative learning environments has been widely covered in several research papers. Programmers' Object-Oriented Programming Environment (POOLE) is an intelligent learning environment focusing on Object-Oriented Programming concepts such as abstraction, inheritance and polymorphism (Chan et al., 2003). Although this environment provides beneficial assistance, this asynchronous resource is not sufficient to create the feeling of assistance necessary for motivated learning. This paper presents redesigning POOLE into a collaborative learning environment that makes use of learning companions. The collaboration tool and use of learning companions in the system is discussed to provide a clear description of the system. Keywords: natural language processing, learning companions, collaborative learning environments, intelligent learning environments, and AI in Education.
