Qualitative and quantitative techniques of model verification

This paper presents some of the qualitative and quantitative techniques used in assessing the fit of the data with the assumed model for the underlying distribution. These two techniques differ in their approach of model verification. The qualitative methods involve a subjective approach in the analysis of the appropriateness of the model to the data, while the quantitative methods involve a more objective approach to the problem. The qualitative methods presented are histogram, sample cumulative distribution function and use of probability paper, while the quantitative methods used are the chi-square goodness-of-fit test and the Kolmogorov-Sonirnov goodness-of-fit test. This study is limited only to one-dimensional distribution.
