Oxygen consumption and opercular movement of Tilapia nilotica exposed to arsenic pentoxide

The effects of arsenic pentoxide As (V) on the oxygen consumption and the rate of opercular movement of Tilapia nilotica fingerlings were investigated. Test fish with mean weight of 5.85 + 0.97 g and mean length of 8.57 + 0.81 cm. were exposed to concentration levels of 5 mg/1 and 10 mg/1 As (V) and...

الملخص:The effects of arsenic pentoxide As (V) on the oxygen consumption and the rate of opercular movement of Tilapia nilotica fingerlings were investigated. Test fish with mean weight of 5.85 + 0.97 g and mean length of 8.57 + 0.81 cm. were exposed to concentration levels of 5 mg/1 and 10 mg/1 As (V) and their respiratory activity was measured. Exposure to 5 mg/1 As (V) resulted to significant increase (p,0.05) in the oxygen consumption but not on the rate of opercular movement of the test fish. At 10 mg/1 As (V) concentration, mean oxygen consumption was significantly decreased (p0.05) but not the rate of opercular movement. However, variation in data due to fish and concentration was statistically insignificant. The data suggested that concentration-related changes of As (V) caused respiratory stress resulting to rapid oxygen uptake of Tilapia nilotica in low concentration (5 mg/1) of As (V).
