Summary: | Extracts from five different fern species and two fern allies were tested for the presence of antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Escherichia coli using Disc Agar Diffusion Method. Methanol was used as solvent and control.Extracts from Tectaria hilocarpa inhibited Streptococcus pyogenes (8.9 mm). Microsorium punctatum inhibited Staphylococcus aureus (9.1 mm) and Streptococcus pyogens (9.8 mm). Lycopodium phlegmaria inhibited Streptococcus pyogenes (8.8 mm). Candida albicans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were not inhibited by any of the plants tested. The control showed no zones of inhibition against all test microorganisms. |
