Detection of fecal coliforms, Salmonella sp., Shigella sp., and coagulase positive Staphylococcus in the fishball sauce being served by peddlers along Taft Avenue and at the Student Personnel Services Canteen

A qualitative, comparative microbial analysis of fishball sauce from two sites was conducted. This microbial analysis is of great importance because it determines the presence or absence of Salmonella sp., Shigella sp., fecal coliforms, and coagulase positive Staphylococcus in the samples obtained from the Student Personnel Services (SPS) canteen and from the peddler along Taft Avenue. Fifteen sweet/sour sauce samples were obtained from each site. Among the fifteen sauce samples obtained from Taft Avenue, four tested positive for fecal coliforms, thirteen tested positive for the presence of coagulase positive Staphylococcus, and none of the samples had Salmonella sp. or Shigella sp. Among the fifteen samples obtained from the SPS, three tested positive for fecal coliforms, eleven for coagulase positive Staphylococcus and none of the samples had Salmonella sp. This study shows that the fishball sauce served at the SPS Canteen is not much safer for consumption than the sauce being served by peddlers along Taft Avenue.
