Summary:A preliminary study on the taxonomy of sea urchins found at Bantiqui Point Tayabas Bay, Laiya, Batangas was conducted for a period of six months from October 1995 to April 1996. Six species of sea urchins were collected and classified under 1 class, Echinoida, 2 subclasses, Euchinoidea and Perischoechinoidea, 2 super orders, Diadematacea and Echinacea, 5 orders, Diadematoida, Cidaroida, Echinoida, Temnopleuroida, and Exocycloida, 5 families, Diadematidae, Cidaridae, Echinometridae, Echinidae and Scutellidae, 5 genera, Diadema, Phyllacanthus, Echinometra, Tripneustes and Echinodiscus, and 6 species, Diadema setosum, Phyllacanthus sp., Echinometra oblangata, Echinometra mathaei, Tripneustes gratilla LInne (1758) and Echinodiscus auritus Leske (1778). The collection site were the intertidal area and in deeper water, the maximum depth of water was 10 to 15 ft. wherein skilled divers were hired.
