This research determined the hindering factors for Filipino college students to engage in formal volunteering and explained how these factors influence the persons decision to volunteer or not. Both quantitative and qualitative research designs were used to gather data. Focus group discussion and a survey were done among non-volunteers who are Filipino college students from various colleges and universities in Metro Manila. There were 24 participants for the focus group discussions having 6 participants for every discussion and 150 participants for the survey. Content analysis was used to analyze the focus group discussion while the survey was analyze was analyzed through descriptive analysis, multiple regression and factor analysis. Results show that the intrinsic factors include own perceptions on volunteerism and challenges the person faces. These perceptions are the students perception on formal volunteering and perception on the volunteers while the challenges are having different priorities on use of resources and hesitations because of personal traits and abilities. On the other hand, extrinsic factors include influences from family, peers, community, school, religion, volunteer organizations and past community service experiences. Intrinsic factors alone do not hinder them to volunteer and same thing goes with the extrinsic ones. These two set of factors interact that makes the tendencies of a person to volunteer. This is because these extrinsic factors modify the intrinsic factors which then would define the volunteering tendency of the person. The extrinsic hindering factors support the intrinsic hindering factors rather than thwart them and vice versa. Moreover, the perception of the person is essential for the factors to become hindrances. And lastly, the basis of to which a person decides affect the decision whether he/she will engage to formal volunteering or not. 2008-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/etd_bachelors/2495 Bachelor's Theses English Animo Repository Psychology
